Knightlow CofE Primary School

Phonics and Spelling

 Phonics - Ruth Miskin Literacy

The programme we use at Knightlow is Read Write Inc

It is specialised programme which is extremely prescriptive and it encompasses all abilities. We begin teaching it in Reception from day 1 . The programme runs throughout KS1 and into KS2 as a catch up programme.  The scheme is rooted in synthetic phonics, is systematic, structured and therefore results in rapid teaching and learning of sounds and blending. Fred the Frog supports the children in 'Fred Talking' and blending letters to make words and in time, become fluent and 'speedy readers'. Children convert whole words they hear into a word on their fingers. We call this Fred Fingers.  Reading books are matched with phonics sounds children know and are learning at that time in their lessons.

Children have individual access to the books they are reading in phonics lessons on the Oxford Owl website and Quizzes are also assigned as home work too.  Pupil Home

 Parent Phonics Workshop

We invite parents from KS1 to join us each year for a 'Live Workshop' event,  in order to support our parents and help them develop their understanding of how we teach phonics at Knightlow and ensure they can support their own children at home. /docs/ks1-reading-workshop-power-point-2024-2025.pptx
